Telehealth & Virtual Consultation Policy

Effective September 5, 2026 · FirstCall Performance Medicine, PLLC

Who provides your care

Virtual consultations at FirstCall Performance Medicine are provided directly by our physicians — Dr. Erik Petersen, DO, and Dr. Will Carlson, MD. Every visit is with a licensed physician, not a delegate or an automated system. Any tools we use to prepare for or summarize a visit remain under physician review; they do not make clinical decisions.

What a virtual consultation covers

Physician-led virtual visits for youth and adult athletes covering sports medicine questions, injury and recovery guidance, and nutrition and performance protocol review. Physicians prescribe when clinically indicated; medications are filled by the patient’s own pharmacy of choice, not dispensed or delivered by the practice.

A virtual visit is a real medical encounter — the same clinical standard as an in-person visit, within what a video or phone assessment can responsibly determine. Where an in-person exam, imaging, or testing is needed to reach a safe diagnosis, we will tell you plainly and help you get it, rather than guess at a distance.

The limits of what we treat

We are physicians and performance coaches. We are not sport psychologists, and virtual consultations do not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions. If a concern falls outside what we’re positioned to help with, we will tell you and help you find the right person — we do not stretch a visit past what it can responsibly answer.

Not for emergencies

Virtual consultations are not appropriate for medical emergencies. If you or your athlete are experiencing a life-threatening condition — chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe injury, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of consciousness, or a mental health crisis — call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Do not wait for a virtual appointment.

Prescribing and medications

When a physician determines that medication is clinically appropriate, a prescription is sent electronically to the pharmacy of the patient’s choosing. FirstCall Performance Medicine does not stock, sell, dispense, or deliver medication directly — that step happens through your own licensed pharmacy, under its own dispensing rules and oversight, exactly as it would with an in-person prescription.

What you need for a visit

A private, well-lit space, a stable internet connection, and a device with camera and microphone (or a phone, if video isn’t available). A parent or guardian must be present for any athlete under 18. You’ll be asked to confirm your identity and current location at the start of each visit, since where you’re physically located can affect what care we’re able to provide.

Your health information

Visit notes, prescriptions, and clinical records are kept in our electronic health record system and handled consistent with HIPAA requirements. Information from a virtual visit is used to provide your care and, with your consent, to inform your broader FirstCall performance protocol — it is never sold, and it is never shared outside your care team without your permission.

Fees

Virtual consultations are billed per visit at the rate shown at the time of booking. Payment is collected at scheduling. If you need to cancel or reschedule, contact us as far in advance as you can so we can offer the time to another athlete.
